A great place to watch the sunset in Manama Bahrain

Bahrain Fort (Qal’at al-Bahrain)

This heritage site is a little gem! The location on the coast is very picturesque, and both the site museum and the old fort and ruins are well worth a visit. The fort was built historically on the coast for reasons of trading and protection – and now this is really one of the few public areas where you can access the coast line. The small but informative site museum is very new and the architecture is very minimal, but also complimentary (architects should take note – it is really nicely done – a rarity in the Gulf!)

This site is not extensive, it takes about a half day to see it all. It is also nice because it seems to attract a lot of local people who like to come out and walk or use the surrounding land. There were even people riding their horses in the open land next to the museum – it is a great place for people watching.

The site is facing North West, so it is also a great place to watch the sunset. They have a nice little cafe with a terrace on the sea-side (with cool sea breezes), so all in all it makes a great afternoon stop.
I was quite taken with the place. Highly recommended.

The Qala’at al-Bahrain (Bahrain Fort) is located off the northern shore and is a five to ten minute drive away from Manama city. It is restored and in good condition although it lacks furniture, signage, or exhibits. Admission is free.

Next door to the fort is a museum, completed in February 2008, which contains many artifacts ranging from the ancient Dilmun periods through the Islamic era, many of which were found at the fort and additional ruins next door. The museum is a large rectangular and white building with absolutely no signs to indicate that it is a museum. The hours are 8AM-2PM daily; admission is free.

Tree of Life. Although trees grow in Bahrain, this one is special because of its location in the middle of the desert amidst the oil wells and other infrastructure of the petroleum industry. You need a car to reach the tree, as it is far from the main roads and not on any public transportation route.
