For a small Muslim country, Bahrain has a surprising choice of nightspots and eateries; its proximity to Saudi Arabia makes many expect an austere and conservative society, but outside of the Shi’ite villages that isn’t the case at all.
The following are western-style pubs that do basic food, serve draft beer, show live sport (usually Premiership and European football), and occasionally have a DJ or a band as well:
The Warbler, Baisan Hotel – They can show three events at once and the bar’s big enough to get served easily. Pool tables are there too.
The Sherlock Holmes, Gulf Hotel – not a bad little bar, live music as well, but can get a little crowded and it isn’t the cheapest venue, being inside a 5-star hotel.
JJ Murphys, Al Bustan Hotel – a “built out of the box” faux-Irish pub, probably the busiest in Bahrain at the moment, although the staff leave a bit to be desired and act as if they are doing the customers a favour.
Maguires Irish Pub, Mansouri <Mansions- Fairly quiet irish bar, lacking in atmosphere and service unfortunately
Henry’s Cafe Bar, Mansouri Mansions – a very nice pub which sadly has very little atmosphere and prices that are too high (possibly related factors), but if you want a quiet after-work drink or meeting it’s probably ideal.
Fiddlers, Diplomat Radisson- Reasonable pub
Diggers, Delmon Int Hotel- Small hole-in-the-wall bar, claims itself Australian, but there were definitely no Aussies, staff or patrons in here
Trader Vics (Ritz Carlton) – cocktails by the sea; always a pleasant atmosphere, and considering it’s in Bahrain’s best hotel not as expensive as it could be – but take your plastic just in case. There is a nice Latino Band, but you may want to consider sitting away from them as it can get really, really loud.
